Artist/Band Info

  • Sister Ray is the bitter brainchild of Ella Coyes. With a childhood full of the jigs and lyrical stories of the Alberta plains, Coyes relocated to Edmonton, Alberta, and formed Sister Ray in 2017. An intimate betrayal led her on a path from young years writing and performing acoustic folk music, to the confessional that has become Sister Ray. After being sexually assaulted by a member of her community, her healing came in the form of performing largely improvised music. The project became a catharsis and a survival mechanism. The same year Coyes released Untitled on independent label Double Lunch Records, recorded live to a small audience. At face full of sweeping reverb, trembling delay, gritty guitar and pushed just past the brink vocals, underneath lies an aching autobiography.
With two years of spontaneous songwriting under her belt, Coyes began writing and performing (mostly) completed compositions, maintaining her affinity for intensity, veracity, and the washed out guitar tones of her live recordings. Recently Coyes has played numerous dates across Canada with acts such as Great Lake Swimmers, Chad Van Gaalen and Mount Eerie. Sister Ray is currently working on writing and recording her debut album.
